I started fishing with my grandad at around 8-9 years old and got hooked immediately catching the resident shoals at my local Arrowvalley lake – it was there a number of years later that I got involved  with the Redditch Kingfishers, a local match group with junior, intermediate and senior sections. I enjoyed a good number of years fishing within the ranks at all levels and competing in nationals, winter and summer leagues with some excellent success. During this time I learnt a full range of skills fishing canals and rivers then the emerging commercial fishery scene – the primary focus was around rod and line skills with stick and waggler fishing being by far my favorite – fishing the waggler for roach and skimmers still holds a special place in my heart and I still spend plenty of time to this day at Arrowvalley catching these beautiful fish.

As I got older the pole came into play more and more, certainly on the canals and still waters. Inevitably numbers dwindled within the Kingfishers and off the back of that a number of members formed Broadacres match group. This is where my match fishing career really took off and we had a great campaign in the West Midlands Drennan league, moving from division 2 to the super league over a number of seasons. We spent time in the company of some of the greatest match fisherman in the area and was a massive learning curve – we also did very well fishing the smaller local leagues. One of my greatest personal victories came fishing a bloodworm and joker league match at Woodlands view, where I managed to take the scalp of a number of the current (at the time) and future Drennan England team.

Most recently I became a member of Maver Solihull Angling, where I competed in their own summer league, which moves around some of the best midlands commercial venues – I’ve been lucky enough to win the league individually twice and came 3rd in the 3 seasons in which I’ve competed in the league. My team came second on every occasion, which is a great consistent performance, and I’ve taken some of my biggest weights on these matches topped by a 196lb weight taken from the match pool at Maver Larford.

Most of my fishing now-a-days is on an individual basis and I’ve qualified for the maver classic finals at Larford with an individual win with 159lb on the first qualifier I fished, I’ve had some great runs of form at Cob House fisheries in Worcester, highlighted with my personal best (and for a short time the fishery best) match weight of 207lb – with no fish over 2lb taken in that weight. I also visit Manor Farm Leisure, Hillview, and Sion Farm (an excellent silvers fishery).

Living in Worcester I am very lucky to be surrounded by nearly every form of fishery available including a pool less than 100 yards from my home!
